Your body is lying to you! Here's how you can tell...
I take eye drops at night for a medical condition.
When I take them, my nose begins to get runny, and I get a brief minor sore throat. For years I wondered, then it dawned on me, my body thinks I'm crying.
Bodies are a strange thing.
Jeremiah 17:9 says this, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" This passage shows us the biblical perspective on the human heart's tendency towards deceit and moral corruption. It suggests that the heart is inherently flawed and capable of leading individuals astray, making it difficult for anyone to fully understand or trust their own intentions and desires.
Thats from a more spiritual understanding. But we can also apply it physically. Our bodies lie to us all the time. That man walking behind you on the street, your body senses a threat, your heart begins to race, and the man hasn't even touched you. Perhaps it's a response to a previous event where something did actually happen. But most times, our mind has tricked our body into these feelings.
Have you ever walked into a room full of people and instantly felt like everyone was judging you. Maybe your clothes, hairstyle, your race… No one said anything, yet you felt “something” that made you want to immediately run out the room.
How about this one, public speaking? Have you ever had to stand up and give a talk, preach, or say something in a meeting. You can see everyone's body language, and that one person is frowning, and it threw your whole speech off?
In a lot of lifes events, our bodies lie to us. Some scientists say it's from actual real dangers in prehistory and our bodies have not adapted to relative safety. I guess i could see that in someone walking behind me, being akin to a predator stalking me in the jungle. But public speaking? Idk.
Many of us Christian professionals have a fear of success. Often that if i attain some measure of it, it was luck, and i won't be a le to sustain it and everyone will ridicule me. When There is ZERO evidence that this will be the case, that you will fail.
Whatever the cause may be, when it happens, try the following things:
Realize that most of the time, your fears are unfounded. Someone said fear means “false evidence appearing real”. You will have to tell your mind that this fear is not real.
Realize that most people are concerned about their own problems and such. It really is often a function of the ego self, to be so self centered enough that you assume everyone else is thinking about you. Most times, they aren't.
Once you fix the brain, then you have to fix the body. A singing group once said “free the mind, and the rest will follow”. We wish it were that simple.
One way to get the body to match the brain, is to practice the jesus prayer with breathing. This slows down the parasympathetic nervous system and stimulates the vegus nerve, which adds to feelings of calm and peace, in the body.
While we can't totally get rid of these feelings of dread, we can absolutely control them and be their master.
Further Ways to Calm the Body When a False Threat is Perceived
To calm the body when a false threat is perceived, start by taking slow, deep breaths to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and reduce stress.
Practice progressive muscle relaxation by tensing and then slowly releasing each muscle group, starting from your toes and working up to your head.
Engage in mindfulness meditation and/or prayer to bring your focus to God, the present moment, and and away from perceived threats.
Use visualization techniques to imagine a peaceful and safe environment, which can help shift your mindset.
Incorporate gentle physical activity, such as stretching, to release tension and promote relaxation.
Listen to calming music or nature sounds to soothe your mind and body.
Lastly, remind yourself of the reality of the situation by using positive affirmations or cognitive reframing to challenge and change any irrational thoughts.
