Why We Point Fingers but Miss Our Own Blind Spots

Pastor Ray Shipman recently said something that makes you think twice:

"Interesting that we talk about everything being demonic but big Pharma. Ozempic has literally taken over the church and witchcraft is rooted in using tools outside of Jesus to control something. Instead of discipline, we use a magic potion..."

It’s a hard truth. We’re quick to call out others for their struggles, but we give ourselves a pass for things we cling to. Maybe it’s not about a magic pill, a diet, or a new self-help book. Maybe it’s about leaning into the tools God has already given us.

Ancient Solutions for Modern Problems

The Church has always had resources for dealing with stress, anxiety, and self-control. Here are some practices that are more powerful than any quick fix:

  1. Intermittent Fasting – Resetting Body and Soul
Before intermittent fasting was a trend, it was a spiritual practice. Jesus fasted for 40 days (Matthew 4:2). Fasting is a way to reclaim discipline over the body. Studies show it can reduce inflammation, improve mental clarity, and even reset our metabolism. It’s a reminder that our bodies don’t rule us – God does.

  2. Almsgiving – Healing Through Generosity
“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done” (Proverbs 19:17).
Giving doesn’t just help others; it helps us. Studies show that acts of generosity release oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which lowers stress and increases joy. In a world obsessed with getting, the Church calls us to give – and find peace.

  3. Walking – God’s Original Stress Relief
Jesus walked everywhere. Science now confirms what Jesus and the disciples knew – walking lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety, and clears the mind. Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a walk and pray. Let God reset your mind.

  4. Prostration – Surrendering the Ego
In Psalm 95:6, David says, “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.”
Prostration – kneeling or bowing down – isn’t just a physical act. It’s a way to humble ourselves before God. Studies show that kneeling can reduce blood pressure, slow the heart rate, and calm the mind. It’s a physical way to surrender the ego and reconnect with our true source of strength.

  5. Community – A Safe Haven for the Soul
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).
Isolation breeds anxiety. Community brings healing. The Church is more than a building – it’s a family. Confession, prayer groups, and simply being with others who genuinely care can provide the support and accountability we need.

What Are You Leaning On?

Quick fixes promise instant results, but they come with side effects. Ancient practices may not be glamorous, but they work. They bring us back to the source – God – and remind us that true healing is holistic.

Next time you’re tempted to reach for a pill, a new app, or a trendy diet, ask yourself:

  • Have I fasted and prayed about this?

  • Have I given to someone in need?

  • Have I moved my body today?

  • Have I surrendered my ego in prayer?

  • Have I reached out to my community?

Before we criticize others for leaning on quick fixes, let’s check our own hearts. God’s ancient solutions are still the best medicine – no prescription required.
