Why Holiness Isn’t Just About Willpower – It’s About Wholeness

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13

Ever find yourself trying to do the right thing but falling short? You pray, you strive, you try to be strong – but you still feel like you're missing the mark. Maybe the problem isn’t a lack of willpower. Maybe you’re just exhausted.

The Real Reason You Feel Weak

When life gets overwhelming, we go into survival mode. We eat whatever’s convenient, skip sleep to finish work, and forget to rest our minds. Before we know it, our bodies and souls are running on empty.

Studies show that sleep deprivation can impair decision-making, reduce self-control, and even lower our ability to resist temptation. You’re not a failure – you’re just drained.

Holiness Starts with Wholeness

In Scripture, we’re called to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). That’s a call to wholeness, not just willpower. But how can we love God with all our strength if we’re too tired to think straight?

  • Heart: Are you harboring anger, bitterness, or stress? Letting go of grudges can lighten your load.

  • Mind: Are you constantly bombarded with news and negativity? Unplug for a while and meditate on things that are pure and lovely (Philippians 4:8).

  • Body: Are you fueling yourself with real food and moving your body? The Apostle Paul wrote, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit?” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

  • Soul: Are you making time to pray, read Scripture, and rest in God’s presence? Jesus Himself took time to step away and pray (Luke 5:16).

How to Start Living Holistically

  1. Create a Daily Rhythm: Set small routines that support your body, mind, and soul. It could be as simple as a 5-minute prayer in the morning, a walk after lunch, and journaling before bed.

  2. Rest Before You’re Exhausted: God created the Sabbath for a reason. Rest isn’t a reward; it’s a necessity.

  3. Fuel Your Body: Drink water, eat whole foods, and avoid sugar crashes. Remember, your body is a vessel – keep it running smoothly.

  4. Guard Your Mind: Limit distractions and focus on what brings peace. Psalm 119:165 says, “Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing can make them stumble.”

A New Definition of Strength

Willpower alone can’t keep you holy – not when you’re running on fumes. Real strength comes from wholeness – from taking care of your entire self so that you can truly walk in God’s ways.

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Rest, refuel, and reconnect with God. Holiness isn’t about gritting your teeth and pushing through. It’s about being whole in Him.
