What is Statio?

What is Statio?
Admittedly, this is the first time I heard of this concept, but I thought it made perfect sense for the purposes of this newsletter. In the Benedictine tradition, statio means stopping between tasks to re-center on God. It’s the spiritual practice of pausing, not rushing from one duty to the next. Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” The early monks believed these pauses kept their hearts attentive to God in ordinary moments.
When doing work, I often take a moment to check my phone or messages, but maybe I should try statio instead…
What Science Says About Pausing
Modern research backs this up. Even a short pause in silence can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and calm stress hormones. Neurologists have found that small breaks improve focus and mental clarity. It’s as if the brain resets, preparing you to step into the next task with fresh energy. When I mix music, we are told to take breaks to let our ears rest. I believe the same applies to the brain for the massive amount of tasks we throw at it all day.
Try This Simple Practice
Before you begin your next meeting, email, or project:
Sit in silence for two minutes.
Breathe slowly and deeply.
Invite God’s peace into your mind and heart.
Thank Him for the work ahead.
Why It Matters for You
This small act of silence integrates faith into the flow of your daily life. Don’t add more to your schedule, per se’, but rather, let’s create space within it. Over time, statio can sharpen your focus, reduce stress, and make your work an offering to God.
