This Will Change the Way You Think About God’s Presence in Your Life
Have you ever looked back on a series of events and realized they were more than coincidences? Have you ever experienced something so extraordinary that it felt like a direct intervention from God?
As Christian professionals, we often divide life into two categories—ordinary and miraculous. We thank God for the “big” moments but overlook His presence in the day-to-day. Yet scripture and Christian tradition teach that there is no separation between the natural and the miraculous—only different ways of seeing God’s presence.
The way God reveals Himself can be understood through three expressions:
Elokim – The Divine in the Ordinary
Hashem – The Divine in the Extraordinary
Hashem is Elokim – The Realization That Nothing is Ordinary
Recognizing these aspects of God transforms how we experience both our spiritual lives and our professional lives.
Elokim – God’s Hand in the Details
The name Elokim refers to God as the Creator of nature. This is how we sense His guidance in the structure of our daily lives. When we notice things falling into place—an unexpected job opportunity, the right person entering our life at the right moment, or even a challenge that later proves necessary for our growth—we are witnessing Elokim at work.
As Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
Saint John Chrysostom echoed this when he said, "The providence of God is not only in great things but in the smallest details of life."
When we recognize God’s hand in the “ordinary,” we develop a sense of purpose, trusting that even in routine work and responsibilities, He is guiding us.
Hashem – The Divine in the Miraculous
The name Hashem (YHWH) represents God as beyond nature, breaking through in ways that feel undeniably miraculous. These are the moments when something occurs that defies logic—a healing, an unexpected rescue, an overwhelming sense of peace in a crisis.
We see this throughout scripture:
The Red Sea parting for Israel (Exodus 14:21-22)
The feeding of the 5,000 (Matthew 14:13-21)
Paul surviving a venomous snakebite (Acts 28:3-6)
These moments remind us that God is not bound by natural laws. In our own lives, experiencing the miraculous increases our faith and shows us that God is intimately involved with us.
Hashem is Elokim – The Realization That Nothing is Ordinary
At the highest level of awareness, we recognize that there is no real distinction between nature and miracles. Every breath, every heartbeat, every interaction is miraculous when seen through the right lens. The same God who parts the Red Sea is the God who holds the universe together in every moment.
As Psalm 118:23 says, "This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes."
The Church Fathers understood this unity deeply. St. Gregory of Nyssa wrote, "The whole world is a burning bush of God’s presence, but we only take off our shoes when we recognize it."
Science even affirms this concept—neuroscientific research shows that gratitude rewires the brain to recognize blessings, making the "ordinary" feel extraordinary. Studies on mindfulness and spirituality indicate that those who intentionally look for meaning in daily life experience reduced stress, increased well-being, and stronger resilience.
Living in the Awareness of God’s Presence
For Christian professionals, this perspective changes everything. When we recognize that nothing is ordinary:
Work becomes worship – Every task, even the mundane, is an opportunity to glorify God.
Challenges become opportunities – Every struggle can be a chance to see God’s guidance.
Stress gives way to peace – Anxiety fades when we trust that every moment is divinely orchestrated.
Saint Basil the Great said, "He who is filled with gratitude always finds miracles."
So today, whether you are facing a difficult decision at work, managing responsibilities at home, or simply going through your daily routine—God is there. The same God who works wonders also works in the details. And when we realize this, we start to see that nothing in life is random, and nothing is truly ordinary.
