This One Habit Changed My Life

As a Christian Professional myself, it is easy to get into robot mode. Work, school, church, family, work, school, church, family…etc… every day until death. Even as I write this, that seems like my life.

But strategic pauses are not only advised, but biblical. We saw Jesus Christ Himself do it all the time. At the times where I am reminded to slow down and take strategic pauses, I always realize there’s some healthy changes I can make.

This One Habit Changed My Life

Most people live in a constant rush—moving from task to task, never pausing, never reflecting. The day slips away, then the week, then the years. And somewhere along the way, they lose sight of what actually matters.

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov taught that “one of the greatest achievements in life is learning to settle the mind. Without it, a person may think clearly for a moment, but not for long. His attention remains weak. His wisdom remains shallow.”

But the one who learns to be still, to reflect, to look honestly at his life—they will see what others do not.

The Danger of a Restless Mind

In the modern world, distraction is normal. Work, emails, news, notifications (maybe even this newsletter)—everything demands your attention. And when life is always moving at full speed, deep thought becomes impossible.

  • Ecclesiastes 1:2“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Without reflection, we chase what does not last.

  • Luke 10:41-42“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.” The restless mind is always busy, but never at peace.

  • St. Theophan the Recluse“You must descend with the mind into the heart.” True wisdom comes from inner stillness.

A person who never learns to quiet his mind will always be controlled by whatever grabs his attention next.

The Gift of a Settled Mind

Someone who takes time to reflect—to see his actions, his desires, his thoughts—gains something rare: clarity.

  • They recognize what is truly valuable.

  • They see where they are wasting time.

  • They begin to detach from things that do not matter.

And most importantly, they begin to hear God.

How to Begin

If you want to settle your mind, start small.

  1. Set aside a few minutes each day. Turn off distractions. Be still.

  2. Ask yourself: Where is my life going? What do you need to change?

  3. Pray without words. Let your heart rest in God’s presence.

  4. Read wisdom. The Scriptures and the saints can guide your thinking.

The world will always pull your attention in a thousand directions. But if you can settle your mind, you will see what few others see. You will find wisdom.
