The One Habit That’s Secretly Making You Feel Older (And How to Fix It)

If you’re like most Christian professionals, you spend hours sitting—at your desk, in meetings, during your commute. But what if this one habit is making you feel older, stiffer, and more exhausted than you should?

Science and Scripture both point to movement as a key to health and longevity. Sitting too much can unravel your fitness progress, weaken your body, and drain your energy. Thankfully, small changes can make a huge difference.

Sitting Too Much Is More Dangerous Than You Think

Research published in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that excessive sitting increases the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and even early death. Long periods of inactivity slow circulation, weaken muscles, and stiffen joints.

Scripture reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Just as we nourish our souls through prayer, we must care for our bodies through movement.

How to Reverse the Damage

The good news? You don’t need a gym membership or hours of free time. Small changes throughout the day can restore your strength, flexibility, and energy.

1. Stand Up Every 30 Minutes

Set a reminder to stand, stretch, or take a short walk every half hour. Studies from Mayo Clinic show that even two minutes of standing or light activity can improve circulation and reduce the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

2. Use a Standing Desk or Walking Meetings

If your work allows, switch between sitting and standing. A study in The British Journal of Sports Medicine found that standing desks reduce fatigue and improve focus. Walking meetings or phone calls can also keep you moving.

3. Stretch and Strengthen

God designed the body for movement. Proverbs 31:17 says, “She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.” Stretching and strength exercises help keep muscles from tightening and joints from stiffening.

Try:

  • Neck rolls and shoulder stretches

  • Standing leg stretches

  • Desk push-ups or squats

4. Walk More Throughout the Day

Jesus and His disciples walked everywhere. Walking is one of the simplest ways to maintain health. Take short walks during breaks, park farther from the entrance, or walk while praying or listening to Scripture.

5. End the Day with Movement

Instead of collapsing on the couch after work, take an evening stroll or do some light stretching. This can reduce stress, improve digestion, and prepare your body for restful sleep.

Conclusion: Steward Your Health Wisely

Sitting too much isn’t just a bad habit—it’s a barrier to the vibrant life God intended for you. By making small adjustments, you can protect your health, boost your energy, and stay strong for the work God has called you to do.

Start today. Stand up, take a deep breath, and move. Your body (and your future self) will thank you.
