The Cold Hard Truth About Networking...And Why Relationships Matter More Than Resumes

Why job openings aren’t the only path to opportunity

Why job openings aren’t the only path to opportunity

I had a conversation the other day with someone about a business networking club that they are a part of. Each club region only allows one company per niche into that particular club, thereby ensuring that referrals come to them for that specific thing that they do. The club is literally a way to network yourself to hundreds of thousands, if not millions.

It got me to wondering about how this works for people who don’t own businesses, but rather work a professional job. How networking is key even for that area as well.

In tough job markets, skills and experience can only get you so far. I read an article weeks ago where Columbia Business professor Dorie Clark uncovers the real game-changer:

“The thing that is going to get you to the front of the line when jobs are scarce is interpersonal relationships with people who are willing to go above and beyond and expend political capital to help you.”

Translation? Your network isn’t just a nice-to-have—it might be your greatest career advantage. For many, it has been. I cant tell you how many times I have seen people who used to work at a previous company, end up working together in another company. (Heck, I’ve done it myself once).

God's Design: We're Made to Connect

Scripture reminds us time and again that community matters:

  • Proverbs 27:17“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

  • Hebrews 10:24–25 – Joining and encouraging others helps keep us spiritually and professionally afloat.

Even the early church didn’t function solo; they met, supported each other, and shared resources. There’s wisdom there that still stands today. There was even a mandated rule that the bishops had to meet twice a year. No rogues, off doing their own thing, ignoring everyone else.

Science Supports Your Network’s Power

Research from Harvard’s 80-year Grant Study shows that close relationships are the #1 predictor of long-term happiness, health, and professional success—not money or fame. I mean, that study will really make you want to switch up your friends.

Being well-connected means better stress management, improved job referrals, and stronger emotional resilience—all things modern careers demand. The fact that the quality of your network of friends and associates have on your health, again, should really make us re-evaluate these people.

Make Networking Easy—and Natural

  1. Start Right Where You Are
Invite a coworker to coffee. Think of colleagues as connections, not competitors.

  2. Give Without Expecting Return
Time, advice, encouragement—these cost you little, but open doors and build goodwill.

  3. Stay Consistent
Send a message once a month—comment on updates, share useful articles, pray for them by name.

  4. Show Gratitude
A thank-you note or small favor can mean more than a pay raise.

Why It All Counts—Even Spiritually

When you invest in others, you’re living out Jesus’ call to love others as yourself (Mark 12:31). You’re not networking—you’re loving. And in that, you honor God.

Let your career become an act of stewardship—showing that faith isn’t just in the church, but in relationships that shape our life’s work.
