Jesus the Therapist?

We often think of Jesus as healing bodies. What we often forget is the head is part of the body.

Did you know that the word "therapy" has a profound biblical meaning?

In Greek, it signifies "to serve," "to care for someone attentively," or "to heal." This term appears about 35 times in the Gospel narratives, highlighting Jesus' compassionate acts of healing.

Here are several verses where the Greek word θεραπεύω (*therapeuō*) appears in the Gospels, specifically referring to Jesus’ ministry of healing and care.

1. Matthew 4:23

"And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing (*therapeuō*) all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people."

2. Matthew 12:10

"And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal (*therapeuō*) on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him."

3. Matthew 12:15

"But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed (*therapeuō*) them all."

4. Mark 3:2

"And they watched him, whether he would heal (*therapeuō*) him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him."

5. Luke 6:7

"And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal (*therapeuō*) on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him."

6. Luke 9:1-2

"Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure (*therapeuō*) diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal (*therapeuō*) the sick."

7. John 5:10

"The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed."

These verses show how Jesus helped people by healing them. He didn't just make them feel better physically; he also taught them, showed kindness, and cared about what each person needed. This means that Jesus' work was not just about healing bodies but also about being kind and helpful to others in a deeper way.

I want to key in on Matthew 4:23 where it says he healed “all manner…”. We sometimes think that mental illnesses or mental difficulties, are a modern phenomenon. Many cultures in the 1st century had an understanding of mental illness, although they may not have always had a clinical framework to diagnose and treat it. The Greco-Roman world had institutions called asklepieia, healing temples dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, where individuals sought relief for physical and mental ailments through treatments involving rest, dreams, and ritual cleansing. The priests in the Levitical tradition were responsible for examining and diagnosing conditions, especially skin diseases. In Leviticus 13 and 14, detailed instructions are provided for identifying "leprosy" (a term likely encompassing various skin conditions) and other forms of impurity, and it was the priest’s duty to determine if someone was "clean" or "unclean."

However, while these cultures may not have had a clinical understanding or framework of mental health, some therapeutic practices were in place. Prayer, community support, and ritual care were integral to Jewish and Christian responses to distress.

So to me, it is suffice to say that Christ, more likely than not, also healed people of mental illnesses as well as helped people receive mental clarity (i.e. therapy). What is my proof? Many Christian saints were very good at this, especially the Desert Fathers; so it wouldnt be a stretch to think that Christ also did it. Scripture says there were other things that He did, that weren’t written in the scriptures. If he healed the body, he also had to have healed minds (again, a part of the body), whether by miraculous healing or counseling/talks/private sessions.

To me, it is no wonder the Old Testament scriptures prophecy “wonderful counselor”. Holy men in those times; what some in Judaism may call “tzadik/tzaddik (a title given to a person who is considered to be righteous and saintly), were known to listen to people and give advice, and not just spiritual advice either.

The title "Wonderful Counselor" comes from Isaiah 9:6, a prophecy in the Hebrew Bible often interpreted in Christian theology as referring to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. In this passage, the prophet Isaiah is foretelling the arrival of a child who will bring hope, peace, and divine wisdom. This phrase, "Wonderful Counselor," describes both the nature and character of the Messiah's role in guiding and comforting His people.

  • The phrase in Hebrew is פֶּלֶא יוֹעֵץ (Pele Yo'etz).

  • Pele means "wonderful" or "marvelous," implying something miraculous or beyond ordinary human capability. This word often appears in the Hebrew Bible to describe God’s works, showing that the coming leader would have divine power.

  • Yo’etz translates to "counselor," meaning one who gives guidance, wisdom, and direction. In ancient Israel, a counselor was often a wise person, such as a king or prophet, who offered advice based on knowledge and insight.

Together, Pele Yo'etz means a counselor who offers wisdom and guidance that is "wonderful" in a divine sense—surpassing human wisdom.

So, said all that to say, Jesus cared about mental health and clarity. Theres no doubt in my mind. So spend the time, money, and do the work necessary to care for yours too. I sincerely believe God invented therapists, mental healthy practitioners, and counselors for us to use and utilize.
