I Don’t Know Who Needs to Hear This, But Silence Can Heal You
Christians for centuries have known a practice that cuts through the noise and brings stillness

Most professionals (like me) live in noise. Meetings, calls, deadlines, and constant notifications keep the mind spinning. It just never stops! But, about 25 years ago I found out that Christians for centuries have known a practice that cuts through the noise and brings stillness not only to the mind but to the heart. It is called the Jesus Prayer.
A Prayer with History
The Jesus Prayer is simple: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
This prayer grew out of the early desert communities of Egypt and Palestine, where men and women withdrew to seek God in stillness. Over time, the prayer became a way to fulfill the command in 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray without ceasing.” It has been passed down for centuries as a tool for inner peace and communion with God.
Why It Works
Science today shows what the Church has known all along. Slow, repeated prayers combined with steady breathing lower heart rate, decrease stress hormones, and activate the body’s relaxation response. Neuroscientists like Dr. Andrew Newberg have found that practices like this strengthen the brain areas tied to focus, compassion, and emotional regulation.
In other words, prayer not only lifts the soul to God but also heals the body and quiets anxiety. I have fond this to be true in my own life, especially in a high stress IT career.
How to Begin
Try this practice for just five minutes a day:
Find a quiet place. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
Breathe slowly. Inhale and begin the words: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God.”
Exhale. Finish the prayer: “Have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Repeat gently. Don’t force it. Let the words move with your breath.
If your mind wanders, bring it back by returning to the rhythm of breath and prayer. (Mine does all the time…it’s okay)
A Small Step with Big Impact
The Jesus Prayer is not about technique or achievement. It is about turning your heart toward Christ and allowing His presence to bring peace. Even five minutes a day can reduce stress, improve focus, and open space for God’s grace to work in you.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Start with a few minutes today. You may be surprised at how silence, paired with this ancient prayer, reshapes your mind and brings rest to your soul.
