What Is a Breath Prayer?

What Is a Breath Prayer?
A breath prayer is a simple way to pray using the rhythm of your breathing. Christians have used this practice for centuries to keep their hearts anchored in God during busy days. It pairs short scripture phrases with your inhale and exhale, making prayer as natural as breathing.
Psalm 46:10 gives us a perfect example: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
The Practice
Inhale slowly: Be still
Exhale gently: and know that I am God
Repeat this for two minutes. As you breathe in God’s truth and breathe out your worries, your body relaxes and your mind clears.
What Science Shows
Breathing exercises like this activate the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate and reducing stress hormones. Neuroscientists have found that slow, intentional breathing can calm the amygdala, the brain’s “alarm system,” helping you feel safe and focused.
Try It Now
Close your eyes. Inhale deeply as you whisper, “Be still.”
Exhale slowly as you say, “and know that I am God.”
Two minutes of this prayer can calm your body, center your thoughts, and open your heart to God’s peace.
