How to Have More Confidence...The Biblical Way
Using the Scriptures to Have More Confidence in Yourself
Article 1: Building Confidence the Biblical Way
The scriptures routinely warn us of pride, but not confidence. My working definition of pride is pretending that you are or that you have accomplished something in and of yourself, without acknowledging others or God. Confidence, to me, is knowing that you put in the requisite work, time, study, got help from others, and faith in God; to accomplish a task or deed. Especially if I am aligned with the will of God, via prayer, wise council, scripture, or prophecy. Confidence is not arrogance, when it is based on discipline, instead of talent. (Erwin Mcmanus)
Here are some scriptures on confidence:
Philippians 4:13 (NIV):
"I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
This verse emphasizes that our confidence comes from the strength that Christ provides.
Hebrews 10:35-36 (NIV):
"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised."
Encourages maintaining confidence as it leads to reward and fulfillment of God’s promises.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV):
"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
Highlights that God’s Spirit empowers us, fostering confidence instead of fear.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV):
"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."
Illustrates the stability and flourishing that comes from placing confidence in God.
Proverbs 3:26 (NIV):
"For the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared."
Assures us that God’s presence provides security, boosting our confidence.
Psalm 27:3 (NIV):
"Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident."
Demonstrates unwavering confidence in the face of overwhelming challenges, rooted in faith.
1 John 5:14 (NIV):
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."
Encourages confidence in prayer, knowing that God hears us when we align with His will.
Confidence is a powerful trait that can positively impact various aspects of your life, from personal relationships to professional endeavors. While some people may seem naturally confident, the truth is that confidence is a skill that can be cultivated and nurtured. Here’s four practical tips that can help you boost your confidence when practiced regularly.
Own Your "Success Story": Surround yourself with reminders of your achievements and cherished moments. Whether it's a framed certificate, a trophy, or a collection of photographs, displaying these items can serve as a powerful source of inspiration and self-assurance. Seeing tangible evidence of your successes can reinforce the belief in your abilities and remind you of what you're capable of achieving.
Spotlight Your Strengths: Instead of taking your unique talents for granted, make a conscious effort to put them to use. If you're skilled with your hands, create something for yourself or your loved ones. If you're an animal lover, teach your dog new tricks. By actively engaging in activities that showcase your strengths, you'll not only hone your abilities but also reinforce a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Accentuate the Positive: A positive outlook is the cornerstone of confidence. If you're not naturally an optimist, limit the amount of time you spend on negative thoughts. Surround yourself with optimistic people, as research suggests that positive emotions can be contagious. Consciously choose to focus on the bright side and reframe challenges as opportunities for growth.
Strike a Power Pose: Confidence isn't just a state of mind; your body language and positioning can play a significant role as well. A study published in 2023 in PLOS One linked power poses to hormonal shifts in both men and women. Try striking a power pose by standing tall, holding your head up, and placing your hands on your hips. This simple act can help you project confidence and cultivate a sense of personal empowerment.
Building confidence is a journey, and like any skill, it requires consistent practice and effort. By implementing these four hacks into your daily routine, you'll gradually reshape your mindset and develop a stronger belief in yourself. Remember, confidence is not only about feeling good but also about embracing your authentic self (which is Christ via being part of His Body) and celebrating your unique strengths.
Philippians 1:20 (NIV):
"I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death."
